Passenger car registrations in the EU grew by 14.5% in September 2019, totaling 1.2 million units overall (1,249,403). This strong result was a consequence of the comparison with September 2018, when sales fell by 23.5% after the introduction of the WLTP tests.
Except for UK (+1.3%), all main national markets posted double digit growth: Germany +22.2%; Spain +18.3%; France +16.6%; Italy +13.4% (with 142,136 registrations, nearly 16.8 thousand more than in the same month of 2018).
From January to September 2019, demand for new passenger cars decreased by 1.6%, with 11,769,175 units. Among the biggest markets, Germany was the only positive one with +2.5% in the first nine months. Spain posted the strongest contraction (-7.3%), followed by UK (-2.5%), Italy (-1.6%, with 1,467,668 cars sold, about 24 thousand less than in the same period last year) and France (-1.3%).
