As every year, on 15th November the requirement to switch from summer tyres comes into force across Italy, replacing them with winter ones more suitable for driving on asphalt at temperatures close to or below zero.
This will remain in effect until 15th April 2022 and will apply across the entire country, although terms may vary depending on location and regulations set out by the owning bodies of the roads and motorways (check the complete list at https://pneumaticisottocontrollo.it).
Penalties are severe for those caught driving without winter tyres or chains in conditions that require them and on specified stretches of road: up to 168 Euro in residential areas and up to 355 Euros if the inspection takes place outside those areas, with the additional possibility of the immediate impounding of the vehicle.
As an alternative, it is possible to fit all-season tyres, which can of course be used all year round: a practical and certainly more affordable solution, but which can be somewhat hazardous when driving often on icy surfaces and in low temperatures.
Whatever you choose, the important thing is to always go to a specialist garage, who will be able to change your tyres (recommending the most suitable model) and adjust the pressure correctly and with the right tools, to ensure maximum safety for the driver on any road. Even in winter.
