May was another negative month for passenger car registrations in the EU, dropping by 52.3%, although safety measures for Covid-19 were gradually eased in many countries. Last month were sold only 581,161 cars, while in May 2019 were 1,217,259.
Looking at the biggest markets, Spain posted the worse performance (-72.7%), followed by France (-50.3%), Italy (-49.6%, with 99,711 units, over 98 thousand less than in 2019) and Germany (-49.5%).
Five months into the year, demand for new passenger cars contracted by 41.5%, as a result of three months of strong declines. From January to May, all main national markets decreased with double digit figures: Spain -54.2%; Italy -50.4% (totaling 451,366 registrations, compared to the 910,872 of the same period last year); France -48.5%; Germany -35.0%.
