The downturn in new‑car registrations across Europe continued in June, falling by 7.3% to 1,010,201 units amid a challenging economic backdrop for manufacturers.
Among the major national markets, Spain bucked the trend with a robust 15.2% increase in June, while France saw a decline of 6.7%, Germany fell by 13.8%, and Italy experienced the steepest drop at 17.4%, with 132,320 registrations – almost 28,000 fewer than in June 2024.
From January to June, the European car market contracted by 1.9%, with 5,576,568 new cars registered. France and Germany were down by 7.9% and 4.7% respectively; Italy also fell by 3.6% (855,028 units - 31,600 fewer than in the same period last year), whereas Spain again bucked the trend with a 13.9% increase.
On the fuel and powertrain front, hybrid‑electric models continued to surge, capturing 34.8% of the market, while battery‑electric vehicles accounted for 15.6%; plug‑in hybrids reached an 8.4% share, petrol models 28.4%, and diesel models 9.4%.
