Commercial vehicle registrations in the EU: -0.9% in July, -18.0 in August, -28.2% in eight months

In July 2020, demand for new commercial vehicles in Europe posted a definitely slight decline (-0.9%) compared to those of the previous months, pushed by the good results of Italy (+16.2%, with 19,987 units sold, nearly 2.8 thousand less than in July 2019), Spain (+2.9%) and France (+1.6%). Among the biggest markets, only Germany slowed down (-5.7%).

On the contrary, in August registrations fell by 18.0%, totaling 126,710 units. With the only exception of Italy (+2.6%, with 11,322 vehicles sold, about 300 more than in August 2019), all main national markets contracted: Spain -23.0%; Germany -22.7%; France -3.1%.

Looking at the different segments, Heavy Trucks, Trucks and Buses & Coaches recorded positive results in July followed by strong declines in August (respectively -11.7%, -11.9%, -26.7%), while LCV posted negative numbers in both months (-1.8% in July and -18.6% in August).

Eight months into the year, commercial vehicles registrations in the EU dropped by 28.2%, with 1,042,823 units overall, more than 400 thousand less compared to the same period last year. All main markets posted double digit contractions: Spain -36.5%; Italy -26.1% (with 103,597 registrations, about 36.6 thousand less than in the first eight months of 2019); France -25.7%; Germany -25.1%.
