European car market: +218.6% in April, +24.4% in four months

Demand for new passenger cars in Europe marked a +218.6% in April, as a consequence of the comparison with April 2020, when sales fell because of the restrictions imposed by governments to contain the spread of the COVID-19.

862,226 vehicles were registered overall, nearly 600 thousand over last year, but about 300 thousand less compared to April 2019. All main national market showed very strong gains: Italy posted the best performance (+3,276.8%), followed by Spain (+1,787.9%), France (+568.8%) and Germany (+90.0%).

Considering the first four months of the year, passenger car registrations increased by 24.4%, with 3.4 million units overall. Italy led the growth (+68.4%, with 592,181 units, about 240 thousand over the same period last year), followed by France (51.0%), Spain (+18.8%) and Germany (+7.8%).
