Passenger car registrations in EU: +9.2% in September, +16.9% in nine months

In September 2023, the EU car market continued its growth with a 9.2% increase in new car registrations, totaling 861,062 units and marking the fourteenth positive month in a row.

Italy and France showed significant gains at +22.7% (with 136,237 units sold, about 25k more than in September 2022) and +10.7%, while Spain posted +2.3% and Germany remained relatively stable with a slight 0.1% drop.

Over the first three quarters of 2023, the EU car market expanded by 16.9%, reaching eight million units. All main national markets posted double digit figures: Italy +20.5%, (with 1,176,003 registrations, nearly 200k over the same period last year); Spain +18.5%; France +15.9%; Germany +14.5%.

Battery-electric cars held a 14.8% market share in September, surpassing diesel again as the third most popular choice. Hybrid-electric cars claimed 27.3% of the market, while petrol cars saw their share drop to 34.1%.
